PENNY DREADFUL & TAROT

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

Penny Dreadful & Tarot

Call me a newbie but I have not yet seen a TV series, movie or any media (except anime) that uses Tarot cards as accurate as seen and used on Penny Dreadful. I've always hated how local (also international) media use Tarot on horror movies where they popularly pull out The Devil and Death card to terrify viewers as to 'what will happen next' to the protagonist on the said movie. Resulting to locals cringing at the sight of a Tarot Card and the reader who wields it in real life - admittedly, very bad for business. I applaud those querents who has courage to overcome this ridiculous notion about Tarot. Don't get me wrong, I have no issues with horror movies using Tarot as part of their script, I have an issue however, when Tarot is used inaccurately.

I will use this spot on this article to emphasize again on what I do and do not do. A part on my FAQ page states:

IS TAROT DEVIL WORSHIP?

No. I do not worship nor am I and my readings or any of the services I am offering associated with the devil. You will find my readings love and light centered and intentions are always set for the highest and greater good.

Dammit, she's good at doing the Ribbon Spread!

Penny Dreadful aired its pilot episode last April 2014 (I'm late, I live in a cave under a rock, I know). It surprised me to see that Vanessa Ives use Tarot cards - keyword: accurately. I had fun automatically reciting what the cards mean when she flips them over and it was, I kid you not, accurate in real life and on the series' storyline.

Penny Dreadful is another horror, psychological thriller, supernatural, adult drama series with a very dark theme and disturbing scenes that occasionally has jump scares - this series is not for the faint of heart. Not my cup of tea really, it's close to home, you see. I'll admit if it were not for Eva Green, I would have never pushed the play button on the remote.

SPOILER ALERT!

Season 1 Ep 1 - Vanessa Ives asks Ethan Chandler to pick a card.

Season 1 Ep 8 - Dorian Gray asks Vanessa Ives to read his future.

Season 2 Ep 3 - This is where Vanessa was taught how to use the Tarot by her mentor.

If you're curious about the series, watch and proceed with caution.
